PRODUCT REVIEW
THE ECHIP KIT
Reviewed by Tom Nelson - Salmon University

The EChip will increase an angler's productivity when used correctly. While simple to use, you do need to understand what an EChip will do for you.

The EChip was invented in the greater Silicon Valley in California. It is an electronic device that triggers accurate strikes by predator fish. In other words, harder strikes mean better hook-ups.

One of the common complaints by salmon anglers is "I had three good takedowns, but no hookups." Dull hooks could cause this, but most likely it is caused by the salmon missing the hook and grabbing the top of the lure or bait. Salmon are notorious for not being accurate strikers.

EChips emit an electrical voltage that is similar to the voltage that is produced by baitfish. Salmon and other predators feel this and use it to zero in on their prey.

Pro Troll has manufactured a number of lures, flasher and bait holder that all use EChips. Now they have added to their product line an EChip Kit. The EChip Kit allows you to add EChip technology to your favorite lures. You will find this will result in harder strikes, better hook-ups and more fish in your box.

The EChip Kit comes in two different configurations with either a single chip in the package or 3 chips in the package. I much prefer the 3-Chip kit, as it has a better dollar value.

The EChip also comes in 2 sizes. The small EChip is ½ inch long and is for small and light baits and lures. The larger model is ¾" long and is for larger and heavier baits. For a spoon by itself or attached to a small flasher, I prefer the ½". For a lure behind a big flasher, I will use the larger (3/4") EChip.

Each of the 3 chip kits will include 1 chip prerigged on a slider. This makes it very easy to add it to the tailhook on your squid by simply sliding the leader through the shrink tube before tying on the second hook. The prerigged slider could also be put directly on the hook.

The 3 chip kit also includes barbell mounts and shrink tubes. I love to use these on spoons as it extends the hook back and since salmon are notoriously short strikers I get better hook ups, hooking salmon that may have missed the spoon altogether.

Remember to use the smaller EChip for lighter lures such as Sonic Edge, King Fisher and Coho Killer spoons. Use the larger size Echips with Squid or large spoons. The EChip doesn't affect the action of the spoons if properly sized. Coat your lure with Smelly Jelly and see your strike ratio go up dramatically.
